STB based on Marvell SoC, reference design and industrialization

Once we have reached the first milestone in the development of Android TV on Marvell SoC, running reference designs and demos, new challenges arose before our team: how to industrialize our solutions, reach mass production and the worldwide market opportunities.

With the OEM Vestel we saw the first opportunity to industrialize the Android Set-Top box and deploy it with the customer Swisscom. The pilot project was based on our IPTV box RK 2000 and was produced for a Swisscom’s subsidiary in a volume of a few thousands devices.

The RT-RK role in cooperation with Swisscom on IPTV Android STB on Marvell Soc, OEM Vestel:

  • Design of first prototypes and hardware concept proof
  • Transfer of the design to OEM (Vestel, Manisa, Turkey)
  • Support for the entire industrialization process from the hardware side
  • The complete software solution development
  • Testing, verification, and certification

This Android STB was the root of many successful Android STB market deployments.

After the pilot project, cooperation with Swisscom continued with the development of “TV 2.0” IPTV Android STB in production of the OEM Arcadian. The project included the complete development and support for product introduction of the STB in premium content delivery, based on Marvell SoC and a software stack from iWedia. The device operated Android4TV using iWedia’s Teatro-3.5 software solution, designed to support IPTV and OTT services with advanced Java user interface. To secure the delivery of premium content live and on demand, Teatro-3.5 was integrated with Verimatrix VCAS for IPTV Conditional Access System as well as with Verimatrix VCAS for Internet TV and Microsoft PlayReady Digital Right Management systems.

Bouygues Telecom (operator in France) Hybrid box (DVB-T + IPTV) Bbox Miami with the iWedia software on Marvell SoC, produced by the OEM Arcadian has been deployed in millions of units. In 2018, the Miami’s successor, Bbox 4K Brooklyn, on Broadcom SoC with the iWedia software also produced by Arcadian, saw the light of the day.
