Streaming

Video streaming today accounts for up to 55% of mobile traffic. Modern video and audio streaming solutions are based on Adaptive Bitrate streaming protocols such as HLS and MPEG DASH. Adaptability of the bitrate is used for the purpose of improving the user experience by providing the means to avoid buffering in a fluctuating bandwidth environment.

Key information for these adaptation algorithms to work well is the estimated bandwidth. Bandwidth estimation is rather challenging to do even in fixed clients such as TVs, STBs or PCs, and for mobile clients the challenge is much bigger. BitRoute is provides an available bandwidth map to mobile clients (mobile phones, tablets, car IVI systems) which can be used in combination with trajectory to the destination to:

  • Optimize bitrate adaptation by having precise bandwidth along the route
  • Calculate “blind spots” in advance and suggest fallback mechanisms
  • Improve overall user experience of streaming while in motion
